Overview

The Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) is the world’s premier center for understanding the future of international competition and conflict. We develop innovative, resource-informed defense concepts, promote public debate, and spur action to advance U.S. and allied interests. Founded in 1983 as the Defense Budget Project, CSBA has long been a leading source of independent, path-breaking research focused on the future of defense and defense budget data and analysis.

CSBA is currently seeking candidates for a full- or part-time, paid Spring 2025 internship with flexible start and end dates. The intern’s primary responsibility will be data collection for a project on current and future Russian military forces, the cost of those forces, and potential modernization options for the Russian military. The selected candidate will also gain exposure to a wide range of defense policy issues.

The selected candidate is expected to be located in the Washington, D.C., area and will be expected to come into CSBA’s offices on a regular basis. CSBA is committed to supporting a flexible work environment for all employees, which includes cooperative telework arrangements between supervisors and employees.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Compile general information on Russian weapons systems and force structure, including quantities and costs
  • Edit written products to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency with CSBA’s style guide
  • Support strategic wargaming, workshops, and other events
  • Complete other minor administrative tasks as required

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in, or recent graduation from, an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, international relations, security studies, economics, public policy, regional studies, or any other field related to CSBA’s work
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated research and writing skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and on a team
  • Strong organizing and editing skills, including attention to detail
  • A demonstrated interest in military affairs and defense research

Preferred Qualifications

  • An interest in military affairs and defense research regarding issues relating to Russia, is preferred, but not required
  • Russian language skills are preferred, but not required
