A Soldier’s Soldier

Gen. Ray Odierno has been chosen to become Army chief of staff, to replace Gen. Martin Dempsey, who was nominated to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff/…/

The general understands what the Army will need, said Andrew F. Krepinevich, executive director of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

“Odierno had been slated to be vice chief of staff, which is indicative of the fact that he has a good understanding of Army programs, budgets and day-to-day operations,” Krepinevich said. “That kind of knowledge is going to be important as he is tasked to organize, train and equip the Army of the future amid tight budgets and emerging challenges.”

“After years on the front lines, Ray understands what the Army must do to prevail in today’s wars, to prepare for the future, and to preserve the readiness of the soldiers and families who are the strength of America’s families,” President Obama said May 30, announcing Odierno’s nomination.
