Andrew Krepinevich, who was on the staff of three US defence secretaries, said: “Isis can be suppressed militarily, but not defeated. To defeat [them] you have to discredit what they stand for. This can only be done by Sunni Arabs not only fighting Isis but also having Sunni religious leaders firmly condemning Isis’s distortion of their faith and presenting it effectively through various forms of media. Is there a case for US coalition boots on the ground? Yes, but in small numbers.”
